The holy river Ganga
, the Indians calls it in the name of Ganga Maata. The India mythology says that the purity of Ganga cleanses the sins of the faithful and aids the dead on their path towards heaven. When someone dies, they dip the ashes in Ganga in sealed pots for the Moksha of the dead. It is the custom of Indians that they keep Ganga water in every house. It is believed that drinking water of Ganga with one’s last breath will take the soul to heaven. The Indian also says that life is incomplete without bathing in the Ganga at least once in their life time. The purana of Hindu’s mentions that, Goddess of Ganga used to exist only in Heaven. Then how she reaches to earth? The story that exists thousands of years in India says that, sixty thousands sons of king Sagar were burned to be ashes because they insult a saint. King wants to give Moksha (release the soul from sins) to his sons. Various saints suggested to the king that, if the holy river Ganga is brought from heaven and ashes were dipped in its water their souls will rest in peace. With the order of King Sagar, his grandson Anushman tried to bring Ganga to earth. But he has not succeeded in it. Then his son Dileep tried for it, he is also not able to do it.
After Dileep his son King Bhagirath worshiped God Brahma for many years to bring Ganges to earth. At last Brahma was pleased with him and he is ready to release Holy River from his Kamandal and let it to flow on the earth. Before it, he said one thing that, he will release Ganga to e
arth but her force will destroy the earth. So Bhagirath prayed Lord Shiva to receive Ganga on his head to save the earth from destruction. Pleasing with the years of pray of Bhagirath, Lord Shiva agrees to do the same. Brahma released Ganga, but it disappeared in the hair locks of Shiva. The king had to worship Shiva again to release Ganga from his hair locks. When ultimately Ganga was released it followed the chariot of king Bhagirath. On the way of it Ganges destroyed the worship place of King Janhu, who drank the whole river due to anger. Bhagirath request him to release Ganga and being pleased with him, he released Ganga who followed the King Bhagirath to meet the ocean in Bay of Bengal at Ganga Sagar. On this way Ganges accepted the ashes of sons of King Sagar thus allowing peace to the departed souls. Due to this Ganga got the name Bhagirathi.
The Ganges starts
The cave Gaumukh is the starting point of Bhagirathi. The Gaumukh comes in the Uttarakand of Himalaya, situated at an altitude of 4,000meters. Passing 23km it reaches to Gangotri
, the first town in the path. In Devprayag of Uttarakand of Himalaya it joins with Alaknanda River, to form the Ganga. The Ganga then flows through the Himalayan valleys and emerges into the north Indian plains to the town of Haridwar, the venue of Kumbh fair. In Gagotri itself thousands of visitor comes to meet Ganga from all over the world every year.
